ActiveQ as a Help Scout alternative

Help Scout and ActiveQ both put email into a shared queue, but they point at different teams. Help Scout is a customer support platform with a free plan; ActiveQ is a lighter ticketing desk and client portal for IT teams and MSPs that work by portal and email, with SLA countdowns and light ITSM on top.

Customer support team, or IT and client support?

If you run a customer support team, Help Scout is probably the closer match. Its homepage describes it as the AI support suite for customer-first teams and says its Inbox brings email, SMS, social, chat and voice into one space.2 The pricing page lists a free plan and three paid plans, Standard, Plus and Pro, priced per user, with Docs sites on every plan.1 ActiveQ takes requests by portal and email only, and its knowledge base is a help center for signed-in portal users, with no public Docs site and no embeddable widget.

If you support employees or clients, the picture changes. One ActiveQ workspace can run employee support, client portals with their own branding, or both, and an MSP can keep many client organizations in it, each with its own portal branding, forms, sign-in method and SLA policy. On top of the shared queue you get incidents, requests, approvals and tasks, each with a live SLA countdown.

Free plan versus a flat price

This is the one place Help Scout is plainly cheaper at the start: it has a free plan, and ActiveQ doesn’t. ActiveQ charges one flat monthly price for a group of agents, $79.99 for 1 to 3, $149.99 for 4 to 8 and $19.99 for each agent above 8, with no feature tiers. Help Scout prices each user by plan. The AI differs too. Help Scout lists an AI agent, a copilot and AI summaries; ActiveQ AI assist runs only when a staff member clicks, and a person reviews each result.

Common questions

Is ActiveQ a shared inbox like Help Scout?

Partly. ActiveQ has a shared queue fed by email, with internal notes, macros, merging and ticket presence (who else is viewing or typing a reply), and it adds SLA countdowns, client portals and light ITSM. The shared inbox to ticketing guide covers when a team outgrows a shared inbox.

Is ActiveQ cheaper than Help Scout?

It depends on how many agents you have and which Help Scout plan you compare with. As of 2026-10-12, the Help Scout pricing page listed a free plan and paid plans priced per user, with some features sold as add-ons. ActiveQ has no free plan and costs $79.99 a month for 1 to 3 agents, $149.99 for 4 to 8 and $19.99 for each agent above 8, in US dollars before tax. Check Help Scout’s current prices against your own agent count, or use the help desk cost calculator.

Can I try ActiveQ before moving off Help Scout?

Yes. Every ActiveQ workspace starts with a 14-day trial with every feature and no card required. CSV import covers contacts and organizations; tickets from your old tool are not imported, so they stay where they are.
